SYNC® 3 Navigation: How to Update Maps | SYNC® 3 How-To | Ford

Overview

If you're a proud owner of a Ford vehicle and living in cities like Corpus Christi, Portland, Robstown, Aransas Pass, Rockport, Kingsville, Sinton, Port Aransas, Ingleside, or Alice, TX, you might be wondering how to update the maps in your car's navigation system. Wonder no more! Your Ford's maps update can be done either through a dedicated USB Drive that you received by mail or by downloading the latest software online. To walk you through the process, we have created a detailed guide. Please note, this process applies to all SYNC empowered Ford cars.

Features

Your Ford vehicle is equipped with many features, and the SYNC system is one of the most prominent ones. The SYNC system is designed to keep you connected to your world. It’s more than just an integrated touchscreen; it’s your command center. This advanced technology was made to be user-friendly, allowing you to upgrade important features like your vehicle's navigation map.

Firstly, to get started with the updating process, you need to determine which version of SYNC your car has and your serial number or ESN. This information can be found very easily. Simply use the touchscreen in your car, navigate your way to Settings, then select General, and finally, select about SYNC. In some of our older models, the system might say, "about."

It's also important for you to check if your vehicle has an automatic engine shutdown feature. This feature needs to be turned off during the update to avoid interruptions. This feature is not equipped in all of our models, but if it is, you can disable it via the Settings option in the touchscreen. For newer models, head on to settings, then vehicle, then "30-minute max idle" option. For older models, use the left-hand steering wheel controls to disable this feature.

Service

Once you have completed the preliminary steps, make sure your vehicle is parked in a well-ventilated area with the engine running. Now you're ready to start the main update process.

Insert the provided USB Drive that contains the new SYNC 3 navigation software into one of your vehicle's front USB ports. Shortly, the display should show a "software update detected" message. Press next to start the update process.

Remember, while this update is going on, your vehicle should be kept running. If you stop the engine or interrupt the update process, the system will require you to restart it. Although the vehicle can be driven during this installation process, some SYNC functions will remain unavailable until the update is completed. After the installation completes, you may remove the USB Drive. Finally, restarting the engine will implement your navigation updates.
