Firstly, SYNC will alert you via the touchscreen with a message informing that it is about to contact 911 services. This process gives the occupant a 10-second window to cancel the call, either by pressing 'cancel' on the screen or holding down the phone button on the steering wheel.
If the call remains uncanceled, SYNC takes over by relaying a prerecorded message to the 911 operator. Once the message concludes, the system allows any occupant of the vehicle to talk directly to the operator. Along with this, SYNC's 911 Assist also shares crucial additional information with emergency services to help them better comprehend the situation and dispatch appropriate resources accordingly. This additional information could include details about the vehicle's location, indication of which airbags deployed, type of collision – front, side, or rear – or a rollover, and how many seat belts were fastened during the incident.
Setting up and Activating your SYNC Assistance
Activating your SYNC's 911 Assist is a straightforward process. The first time you pair your phone with the Sync system, the interface will prompt you to activate 911 Assist. Should you decide to activate it later, simply navigate to 'settings', then '911', and slide the button to activate.
Ford also adds an additional safety layer by allowing you to add two 'In Case of Emergency' (ICE) contacts from your contact list. These contacts will be displayed immediately following an emergency call placed by SYNC. To set this up, press 'set emergency contacts', then choose a contact from your list.
