At Ford, our journey towards a more sustainable, efficient, and cleaner-congested transportation system started over two decades ago. Our experience in the automotive industry has taught us that the current car-centered transport system, which was the foundation of the global economy, is no longer a viable solution for the planet, the economy, or the population. The need for a major redesign is apparent and we are enthusiastic about spearheading it. It's not just about creating cleaner and smarter vehicles, it's about reshaping the way the world moves to ensure that everyone and everything can journey efficiently and sustainably. This is our mission, and with us, sustainability isn't just an idea; it's a promise.

What Ford Is Doing

Our commitment to sustainability is two-fold: we aim to reduce CO2 emissions substantially and invest extensively in developing electric and self-driving vehicles. Acknowledging that climate change is a reality that needs to be swiftly addressed, we have chosen to align with the Paris Climate Accord in crafting our sustainability blueprint.

An integral part of our contribution is an investment of $11 billion into developing new types of vehicle propulsion. This investment will work towards paving the way for a diverse electric vehicle lineup which includes our pride, the F-150, and the Mustang. By making our factories more sustainable, and embracing electric propulsion, we are making great strides in showing the world that a greener future is possible without abandoning individual mobility.

However, even with all these efforts, congestion continues to be a major challenge. As of soon, there will be approximately four billion cars on the road. Notably, even if all these were zero-emission vehicles, the traffic jam problem would persist; hence, our realization that merely manufacturing greener vehicles is not an all-encompassing solution.

Ford's Innovative Solution

Recognizing that cleaner vehicles alone cannot solve traffic congestion and emission challenges, we've introduced a novel approach to the problem - the Transportation Mobility Cloud. Coined TMC and created through collaboration with Autonomic, the TMC is an open-source cloud platform designed to facilitate efficient and coordinated journeys in our cities.

The TMC is revolutionary because it can consolidate data streaming in from multiple smart, connected modes of transportation and infrastructure into a cohesive language. This interconnectivity enables different means of transportation to coordinate, facilitating efficient journeys and, consequently, significantly reducing emissions. Imagine instantaneously knowing the most efficient route for your daily commute, translating to less time spent on the road and reduced gas consumption. This is the future we envision at Ford.

The concrete steps towards realizing this future have already been implemented in various cities, including Corpus Christi, Portland, Robstown, Aransas Pass, Rockport, Kingsville, Sinton, Port Aransas, Ingleside, and Alice, Texas.
